Mitchelstown Win Opening League Game Under New Lights

Div.4 County Football League.

Mitchelstown  1. 11 Ballydesmond O 09

Mitchelstown played Ballydesmond last Thursday night in their opening League game of this years Intermediate Football league Division 4. Conditions for football were not ideal ,wind and rain being the main protagonists.

Straight from the throw in both teams showed a great attitude and every ball was keenly contested with Ballydesmond settling the better this mainly due to the fact it was their 4th outing of the year and they opened the scoring on the 5th minute with a well taken point by their Captain Doonaca o Connor. Mitchelstown responded well with a good move involving Dave Dinnen & Lar Flynn was finished by Cathal O Mahoney who kicked a lovely point from 35 yards out.

Both teams then exchanged points from frees. Ballydesmond went to the front on the 15th min with a well worked score. Sean Walsh responded on the 18th min to leave the sides level at a time when Mitchelstown were getting on top in midfield. Then a superb kick from Jim Sheehan  and another O'Mahony free edged Mitchelstown 2 points clear approaching half time but Ballydesmond finished very strongly and kicked 3 points in the final 5 minutes to leave them leading 0 6 to 0 5 at half time.

Mitchelstown started the second period well & a Shane Beston point had us level on the 35th minute.  Shortly afterwards, a Cathal O'Mahony free put mitchelstown in front for the first time in the game on the 37th minute before a Ballydesmond point had the teams level on the 42nd min.

Both teams were guilty of missed opportunities in the next few minutes but on the 50th min Cathal O'Mahony won the ball on the 40 yard line, turned his man and headed straight for goal before he was fouled and brought to the ground just as he was ready to shoot. The referee pointed straight away to the penalty spot before Cathal stood up & slotted it to back of the net to leave Mitchelstown 1 07 to 0 7 ahead with 12 minutes to play.

Straight from the kickout Ballydesmond moved the ball well up the field and carved open the Town back line only for Luke Hanna to make a great save before the ball was picked up by Owen Burke who passed to Sean Walsh who put Jim Sheehan through for a point on the 53 rd minute. A further point by O'Mahony and two well kicked points by the Brick Walsh had Mitchelstown 7 clear entering the last 5 minutes. Ballydesmond finished well and kicked points in the 58th and 59th mins to reduce the gap to 4 entering injury time before Cathal finished the scoring on a night that he was head & shoulders above the opposition.

The manegment were delighted with effort and with the win in the opening game of the year and will be upping the training in coming weeks for Champinship in April .

Cavanagh's Div.2 FL

Mitchelstown 0-03 Shanballymore 4-14

Mitchelstown put in a very disappointing display in the opening round of there junior league last Sunday morning at Limerick rd grounds.

Shanballymore were much the stronger and more determined & they lead by 9 points to 2 half time and took complete control with an strong burst at the start of the 2nd half and eventually ran out easy winners.

The management team will be disappointed with the result despite missing quiet a few on the day & will be hoping for better performances in the coming weeks .
