MITCHELSTOWN DEFY THE ODDS AND QUALIFY FOR COUNTY FINAL WITH IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE
MITCHELSTOWN 2 13
CILL NA MARTRA 1 10
Mitchelstown travelled to Banteer last Saturday evening in high hopes of qualifying for this year’s IFC final and they did that with a brilliant display of power, fluency. And determination that was great to see the rain that had poured down the previous night and morning had stopped and conditions were near perfect for the large crowed that attended. Cill Na Martra who were warm favourites started the game very well and in the opening 5 minutes had most of the -position but to be fair to Mitchelstown they defended very well and gradually grew into the game the west cork side opened the scoring on the 5th minute and 7th min to race into a 2 point lead with both scores coming from losing possession cheaply Jim Sheehan got Mitchelstown off the mark with a well kicked point on the 7th minute the game was being played at a frantic pace and intensity by both sides a Shane Beston kick dropped short into the keepers hands but he dropped the ball recovered it and was immediately tackled by Dave Dinnen who was following in the dislodged the ball in the tackle and cooley placed the ball in the back of the net to put Town in front by 2 after 15 minutes this give great impetus to Mitchelston a further point by Cathal O Mahoney increased the lead but back came CILL Na Martra with two very good points of their own by their inter county player D O Duinnin to leave the minimum between the sides then on the 23rd min the West Cork side had their midfielder sent to the line leaving the ref with no choice MIitchelstown piled on the pressure for the remaing of the half some brilliant build up play from the half back line led to a Cathal O Mahoney point followed by a brilliant individual score by Sean Walsh then on the 28th min Cathal O Mahoney received the ball out on the wing beat his marker and bearing down on goal he cooley placed the ball to the back of the net Mitchelstown were in complete control all over the field and did not want the whistle for half time in injury time Jim Sheehan kicked a very good score to leave Mitchelstown leading at Half Time 2 06 TO O5 Mitchelstown were straight into their stride at the start of the 2nd half there was no complacency with this Cill Na Martra side two wonderfully kicked points by Shane Beston and Sean walsh on the 33rd and 37th min had the lead stretched out to 9 but back came Cill Na MATRA who kicked 4 points without reply to reduce the gap to 5 legs were getting tired changes made by the selectors had the right effect as has been the case all year they brought renewed energy to the team Dave Dinnen kicked a wonderful point all of 40 yards out to settle the nerves then Jim Sheehan added another with Cathal O Mahoney scoring a brilliant individual effort to stretch the lead out to 8 and seemingly impossible for the west cork side to come back but back they came a great goal by their star forward Duinnin reduced the gap to 5 with 4 minutes remaing plus injury time but Mitchelstown soaked the pressure easily enough and on 60th minute D Dinnen kicked a wonderful point copper fasten the victory, first of all Congratulations to all the panel selectors who have got Mitchelstown to the final this was their 7th Championship game this year 5th week in a row they have been out also a special thanks to the Supporters who have travelled in big numbers the last couple weeks I know the players really appreciate it especially last week 5 down v Rockchapel with 15 to go ye were heard at your loudest great Supporters, next few weeks will be hectic to all shops and houses get the colours in support of this great bunch of lads we will play Kanturk in the final and will be underdogs again but we will not fear them and travel to pairc ui rinn 0n the 21st in high spirits.
